On Wednesday 11 February, former British Ambassador to Iran Robert Macaire CMG will come to speak to us about the ongoing protests in Iran and their very brutal suppression.

This evening is our attempt to gain greater attention for the Iranian protests, and those who have lost their lives in them. As HM Ambassador, Rob dealt closely with the Tehran regime during a period of nuclear diplomacy, and in negotiating the release of British detainees. He also became one: during his time in Tehran, and very unusually for a diplomat, he was arrested by Iran while attending a vigil for victims of Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752, which was shot down by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, killing all 176 on board.

In his career Rob has also been HM High Commissioner to Kenya, head of Counter Terrorism Policy in the immediate post-9/11 period, and director of consular services (including crisis response); as political counsellor in New Delhi he led the team responding to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
